On Friday, the resolution titled ‘From rhetoric to reality: a global call for concrete action against racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance’ was tabled before the council. The United Kingdom, United States and Ukraine voted against a resolution to take action against racism at the fifty-first session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.Ĭountries that voted against the resolution include Czechia, France, Germany, Montenegro, the Netherlands and Poland. That is all for those who commented here.

*** "they do not agree that states are required to make reparations for the slave trade and colonialism, that caused suffering.but were not violations of international law at the time" They claim these claims divert focus on tackling contemporary racism However, they do not agree with multiple references to the Durban conference. UK position, will remain resolute in fighting racism and xenophobia. Blames the Durban process, citing misuse and antisemitismįinland (Abstained) stated their is no justification for racial discrimination, however their are elements in the resolution that they can not fully support. Believes it is a priority and a major challenge. Germany position, states they believe racism and xenophobia is wrong. Says Durban declaration has no universal framework for the fight against racism.

Disagrees with the Durban declaration, which the US cited as its reason for voting against earlier. Lastly, they do not believe additional resources necessary unless ways are designated to provide results.įrance position, also claims to support the elimination of racism, but counters with " rights are enjoyed and held by individuals and their bases of the humanity and not based on their adherence to one group or the other." They continue with " discriminating on the basis of any criteria, whether that be origin, is unacceptable, as is reserving rights to certain groups." Both of these acts undermine Frances values. Largely, they have issues with the DDPA (he was slightly difficult to understand here). They do not believe this group, independent & eminent experts, adds any value to the DDPA, rather the group be dismantled and funds re-budgeted.
YEAP OR YEP FULL
The USA listed what they believe they've done to combat racism as well.Ĭzech position, Agrees with the UN's full elimination of racism, however, they have problems with the term limits of the independent & eminent experts (which was limited to 4 years). USA position is they are voting "no" essential due to the 2001 Durben Conference, the 2009 Durben Review conference and the DDPA which they find either Anti Semitic, singles out Israel and/or, specifically, the DDPAs overboard restrictions on freedom of expression.
